MOTS-C
MOTS-c is a mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within the 12S rRNA region of the mitochondrial genome, making it one of the few known peptides of mitochondrial rather than nuclear origin. It has emerged as a significant research compound in metabolic biology, exercise physiology, and longevity science, with a mechanism of action centered on cellular energy regulation and stress response.
Mechanism MOTS-c translocates to the nucleus under metabolic stress, where it regulates gene expression related to glucose and lipid metabolism via the AMPK pathway. It has demonstrated an ability to enhance insulin sensitivity, improve mitochondrial function, and mimic aspects of the metabolic adaptations seen with exercise.
